At the age of nine Julien Grenier witnessed the brutal murder of his grandfather. Now, at forty-five, he continues to be plagued by horrific nightmares of that tragic event. Julien has recreated himself, building emotional walls that even his young wife cannot penetrate. Though somewhat moody, Julien is a good man with a heart of gold, enabling his wife, Rachael, to turn a blind eye to his tightly-kept secrets.

But after a home invasion assault leaves Rachael emotionally unstable and destroys their care-free and content world, they relocate to a safer environment with the hope of a fresh start. At first, their new home in the beautiful and serene Catskill Mountains appears to be the miracle they prayed for, until a traditional children's game begins to destroy their bliss. Can Julien and Rachael escape the nightmare of Kings Hollow - or is this just wishful thinking?

Wishbone Becareful What You Wish For (Audible Audio Edition) Brooklyn Hudson Jean Brassard Cherry Hill Publishing Books

We learn important lessons from Brooklyn Hudson's dramatic horror Wishbone. We learn that we should really be careful of what we wish for and to be thankful for what we already have. Brooklyn cleverly crafts a novel that chills us to the bone and will make us think about our lives and our choices.

In the spirit of her mentor and inspiration Stephen King, she creates a fast-paced novel full of surprising and shocking twists and turns. We feel for the characters, especially Julien who grew up in France on a farm with his grandparents. His grandfather was good to him, but the abuse he suffered from his drunken father Jerome left scars that would one day return to haunt him.

Julien moved to the US to study and work. He met his wife Rachel, and they enjoyed marital bliss for some time. Then, one incident changed their lives and put them on a deadly course. After Rachel's attack by a robber and loss of her baby, she changes drastically. This deep depression leads Julien to find them a quiet country home. Well, "the grass is not always greener on the other side." Sometimes when dreams, and new homes, seem too good to be true, then they might be.

What they discover in the countryside and in their new home appears to bring them joy, especially Rachel. However, as time progresses we see too many changes. Rachel gets caught up in a wishing game that is just as disturbing as getting three wishes from a cheating genie. Julien notices something is wrong, and his investigation leads to even more danger and more intrigue. Can he get his wife to realize the truth and the danger? Can he reach the real Rachel before it is too late? Will they survive?

Brooklyn plays with our psychology in this novel. The surprises are horrifying. The discoveries are nervous pleasures. She keeps the reader frantically flipping the pages of Wishbone to find out what will happen next.

Brooklyn creates strong characters and imbibes them with life and strong personalities. She does a great job with Julien's French accent that tends to rear its head when he is stressed. We follow the personality changes and the growth of both Julien and Rachel. Even the secondary characters are filled with complexities.

Wishbone amazed me; Brooklyn is a master storyteller. She keeps us guessing until the end and then gives us an awesome and satisfying ending to such a tragic tale. Truly, Brooklyn is a female "Stephen King." Wishbone deserves more than ten stars!

Wishbone Becareful What You Wish For (Audible Audio Edition) Brooklyn Hudson Jean Brassard Cherry Hill Publishing Books Reviews

This novel is very reminiscent of the short story "The Monkey's Paw" but it is definitely its own story. It's very difficult to write any kind of review without spoilers, but I will try. Julien and Rachael are both very deeply traumatized and disturbed characters -- having suffered tremendous psychological damage. Julien saw his grandfather killed by his own father, and Rachael was assaulted leading to a miscarriage. Attempting to escape from their pasts, they find a world where their wishes seem to be instantly granted.
It's possible to read this book as a psychological thriller, ignoring any supernatural aspects and focusing only on the wishes themselves. The author has done an admirable job of revealing how their hurts and fears lead them to work together and against their partner. The sequence of escalating wishes and distrust is a window into the worst of humanity.
There have been comparisons to Steven King, and I understand the reasoning. Many of King's novels also work on those two levels -- with the supernatural elements serving to heighten and reveal the psychology and pathology of the characters. For example, The Shining was on one level a tale of a character losing touch with reality, which was much more interesting than the ghosts of the hotel. Wishbone had the same feel to it. I found myself lost in their reactions to the other's choices, and far more interested in what they would ask for next.
This is more a horror/fantasy in that there are no real attempts to explain what is happening. Occasionally, chapters will be from Sarah's perspective, the developmentally delayed caretaker of the chickens. At times, it is hard to keep track of what is real, fantasy, or wishes, but the suspense was unrelenting.
There were a few minor errors of word usage but they did not detract from the story. I didn't always like the characters, but I couldn't stop reading because I needed to know what happened next.
