I absolutely love dystopian, end-of-life-as-we-know-it, type of novels. George Orwell's 1984 (Signet Classics) and Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale happen to be two of my favorites. This novel started with great promise...And then it fell short. Very short. The novel is about Wisty and Whit Allgood, two teenage siblings who are kidnapped by the New Order, a form of government that has taken over the world. During this time, Wisty and Whit discover that they have magical powers, and that is why the New Order considers them a threat. The story opens up with Wisty and Whit being led to the gallows in a sports arena, with thousands of people cheering on their hanging. As the proceedings commence, Wisty and Whit take us into the backdrop of the story, how they found themselves condemned to death.In a trite and oversimplified manner, we learn that our political system crumbled overnight and was replaced by the New Order headed by "The One Who Is the One." As Wisty and Whit continue to battle some of their challenges, they become more aware of the magnitude of their supernatural powers. The story crosses over from Wisty and Whit's time in prison, over to other worldly dimensions (such as the Shadowland where spirits dwell) back to an unrecognizable world overwrought with despair, war, and hopelessness. But none of this is captured with any depth.
What I thought would be a great dystopian story seemed more like a cat-and-mouse fantasy under a dystopian backdrop. I do enjoy fantasies and stories of magic along with mayhem, but there was something missing in this story. It was entertaining in some areas but it lacked the thrilling suspense I would expect in a novel written by Patterson.
This is the first book in a new series and unfortunately, it leaves readers with a rather weak cliffhanger. This series may have some promise and hopefully, the next book will delivery on that.

Wisty and Whit Allgood are just your average every day teenagers. Or, so they thought. When the "New Order"comes crashing into their home to arrest them as being witches, the teens are baffled. They are even more shocked when their parents who are told they can send one item with each child send them off with a drumstick and a book with wordless pages.

Things really heat up when Wisty discovers that when she gets really angry, she bursts into flames. Kind of making that "I am not a witch!" story seem not so true after all... As time goes on, Wisty finds out even more things she can do and how to control her new-found skills. Enter in Whit's dead girlfriend who helps them in their confinement, and things are bound to get interesting.
Why did I want to listen to this audio/read this book? I have a fairly civil relationship with James Patterson. I really have enjoyed some of his books on audio and I was very curious about what he would do with a YA book, as well as what kind of narration would go with it.
James Patterson and co-author Gabrielle Charbonne write an interesting first YA novel. I have heard this referred to as dystopia but it didn't seem that way to me, more fantasy/ paranormal. It was interesting, told in alternating chapters from each siblings point of view and felt more MG (middle Grade to me than the YA I have read.
The narration by Spencer Locke and Elijah Wood was pretty good in this 5 hour and 41 minute audio.
While I did not find the read captivating to the point that I must continue on with the series, I did find it fun and light and I believe young YA readers or older MG readers would enjoy it.
Overall I really liked the book. It kept you on your toes and was really hard to put down as most of Patterson's books are.
"The Fire" is the third installment to James Patterson's Witch and Wizard series, and magical YA story about teenage brother and sister Whit and Wisty Allgood, the two people who have been prophecied to save the world from the evil One Who Is The One. The One has taken away everything we love, music, imagination, art, and magic has been outlawed. With their parents dead, their friends in the resistance dead or scattered, and Wisty sick with the blood plague, victory over The One seems like a pipe dream. The two must dig deep and hone their powers if they will ever be triumphant.

Young adults and adults who enjoy fantasy & magic. An edge of your seat book. There is some violence & death and a bit of nail biting action.
My thoughts
Once again we are plunged into the world of Whit & Wisty Allgood, the Witch and Wizard. They are learning to control their powers and continuing to lead the resistance in the fight against The One Who is The One. They are fighting for the future of their world, while the New Order (N.O.) is brainwashing and torturing children to turn them into killing machines. The stakes are higher than ever and Whit & Wisty are in more danger than ever.
This is a great series, lots of adventure & danger and twists & turns. Like all Patterson books, the chapters are short and fly by. I finished this book in one day.
